How long will Mattis remain SecDef?
I watched most of the Mattis confirmation hearing today and as I expected, I was impressed with his testimony. But not necessarily for his answers about defense, foreign policy or DoD policy on LGBTQ stuff. You can read about that stuff here.
Nope. I was impressed with his quiet dignity and confidence. I was impressed with his erudition and knowledge of the military and history. He's a warrior/scholar. Having been to war, he's also a reluctant warrior, and that's good. Most of all though, I was impressed with his integrity.
One of the reasons Gen. Mattis was a civilian is because he stood up to the powers to be in the Obama administration one too many times concerning their various policies and orders. He was "troublesome" in that regard. He will stand up and be counted whether or not you like what he has to say or not.
I don't expect anything less of him in a Trump administration. That means it could go two ways. One, he could be the SecDef for Trump's full term, if Trump has the wisdom to listen to him. Because James Mattis is going to tell him, in no uncertain terms what he thinks of a pending policy or decision. He could become one of the most important cabinet members in the Trump administration. Or he could be gone in a few months.
It all depends on Trump.
