Self-defense: My life, my choice

I think most people realize that true self-defense depends on one's self and not some other entity. While it may make you feel good to know the police are there to "serve and protect", protection that is 10 minutes away when the threat to your life is immediate is, in reality, useless.

A twelve year-old boy in Goldsboro, NC learned the truth of that matter when he was forced to defend his 73 year-old grandmother from armed home invaders. Had he not had access to a firearm, this story would have likely had an entirely different outcome.

On Feb. 13, around 1 a.m. local time, officers responding to a report of gunfire entered the apartment of Linda Ellis. There, officers found Ellis, a 73-year-old black woman, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Police subsequently found Khalil Herring of Goldsboro at a nearby intersection also suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Both Ellis and Herring were taken to a nearby hospital where Mr. Herring succumbed to his injuries. Ellis was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is reportedly listed in stable condition.

An investigation into the shootings led detectives to believe that two masked intruders, one of them allegedly Mr. Herring, forced their way into Ellis' apartment and demanded money before shooting the elderly woman. A 12-year-old juvenile occupant of the apartment, reportedly Ellis' grandson, is believed to have then opened fire in self-defense causing the two men to flee.

It would be hard to argue, given the rapidity of the event and the apparent lethal intent of the criminals, that it would have been better to wait for the police. Instead it is clear that the use of a firearm by this youngster was both timely and necessary to protect his grandmother and himself.  The fact that his grandmother had already been shot by the invaders makes it pretty clear that both of their lives were in mortal danger.  He exercised his innate right to self-defense and he did so with a tool that evened up the odds and seemingly saved both is life and his grandmothers.

When the left talks about banning guns, they're really talking about restricting your right to self-defense. They have no practical alternative to firearms, but for some reason, they believe possession should be limited to law enforcement (who they seemingly and ironically hate) and the military (who they distrust).

Imagine, then, the above scenario played out in Goldsboro with only the criminals having firearms (because in any scenario, they will). What then? Is there any question what the outcome would have been?
